What is Labour Day?
Labour Day, celebrated on the first Monday in September, holds special significance in Canada. It marks the end of summer and provides Canadians with an opportunity to honor and appreciate the contributions of the labor force to the country’s prosperity and well-being. In keeping with this tradition, Bay River College is pleased to announce its closure on Labour Day, September 4th, 2023. In recognition of the hard work and dedication of all workers.
A Brief History of Labour Day in Canada
Labour Day in Canada has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. The first Canadian Labour Day was organized by the Toronto Trades Assembly in 1872, inspired by the American Labor Day movement. In the years that followed, the idea of a dedicated day to celebrate workers and their contributions gained popularity across the country.
By 1894, Labour Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in Canada. Today, it stands as a symbol of the achievements of the labor movement and a tribute to the ongoing efforts of workers across all sectors.

At Bay River College, we recognize the importance of our dedicated staff, including instructors, administrative personnel, and support staff, who work tirelessly to educate and also support our students. Closing our doors on Labour Day is a small token of our appreciation for their unwavering commitment and dedication. Also In Alberta, we celebrate Labour Day each year.
Celebrating Labour Day
Labour Day celebrations in Canada take many forms, from parades and picnics to family gatherings and community events. It’s a day for people to relax and enjoy the last long weekend of summer before the fall season begins. For instance, Many Canadians take this opportunity to appreciate the beauty of their natural surroundings. Especially for Albertans and residences of Calgary to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
While the celebrations this year may still be influenced by health and safety measures due to ongoing events, we encourage everyone to find a way to relax, unwind, and appreciate the labor force that makes Canada the great nation it is.
Closing Announcement: Bay River College on Labour Day
In honor of Labour Day and as a gesture of appreciation for the hard work and dedication of all workers, Bay River College will be closed on Monday, September 4th, 2023. Bay River College encourage students, faculty, and also staff to take this day to rest. We recommend spending time with loved ones, and enjoy the festivities that mark this important holiday.
We will resume our regular schedule on the following day, Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, with refreshed spirits and a deeper appreciation for the contributions of the Canadian labor force.
