Overview
Bay River College’s IPAC Medical Device Reprocessing Program, endorsed by IPAC Canada, is an interactive online course designed for healthcare professionals and frontline workers who are looking to enter the field of medical device reprocessing.
Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians play a vital role in the healthcare system by ensuring the proper cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of medical equipment. They are responsible for decontaminating, disinfecting, storing, preparing, testing, and packaging surgical and medical instruments using appropriate sterilization techniques and equipment.
In addition, MDR professionals maintain cleanliness and sanitation in their work areas and are responsible for inspecting and caring for supplies used in surgical and medical procedures. This program provides comprehensive training in decontamination, inspection, packaging, sterilization, and handling of sterile surgical instruments and supplies, with a strong emphasis on infection prevention, control, and aseptic techniques.
Through both simulated labs and clinical environments, students develop practical skills and professional competencies. Key learning areas include medical instrument cleaning processes, sterilization techniques, autoclave operation, sterile storage, and adherence to safety protocols. Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce with confidence, ensuring safe and sterile healthcare environments.
This program is designed for professionals with at least one year of experience in medical device reprocessing. It enhances expertise and prepares learners to challenge the Canadian certification examination in medical device reprocessing. The course focuses on delivering quality outcomes that contribute to improved patient care.
The flexible delivery format includes both synchronous and asynchronous learning, allowing students to progress at their own pace within the program timeframe. Students will deepen their understanding of reprocessing standards aligned with Canadian regulations, infection prevention best practices, and safety requirements for both staff and patients.
